mean mommy

In Asher's 18 month post I mentioned that he has recently been expressing his more, um, dramatic side.  When things happen that he doesn't like {or don't happen that he would like} major waterworks explode.  Case in point...

The other day we were driving home from running errands and Ash managed to spray his water cup ALL over the place.  His shirt, pants, and car seat were all soaked.  Fantastic!

When we got inside I insisted that he change out of the wet clothes and he resisted.  Strongly.

What kind of terrible mommy makes a boy take off his favorite Hulk shirt?

{It's kind of hard to see, but the whole left side of the shirt is soaking wet}

Asher splash!

How can you not chuckle a little at this face?  See his slowly falling tears - ha!

Although I don't think laughter was what he was going for, we did eventually come to a compromise.  While I do find his dramatics pretty hilarious, I understand that in his world being forced to take off a beloved shirt is a tragedy.  The thing is - this kind of melt down happens almost every day around here and I'm pretty sure if I didn't laugh at him occasionally we'd have an even bigger problem on our hands {namely, crazy mama!}.

Don't worry, empathy abounds in the moment.  :-)

Overreaction, thy name is toddler.

big and strong

Asher went for his 18 month well visit today and got a clean bill of health!

He's perfect - and has the most perfect monster face.  That's what Drew and I affectionately call this expression.  :-)

The new stats:

height - 32.5 inches {57th percentile}
weight - 23.5 pounds {18th percentile}

He is a little bit on the light side, but Dr. L says that Ash is sticking to a great growth curve, so this is fine for him!  He is gaining like he should be and on the right track for a healthy Asher.  :-)

The only thing we need to work on is getting more protein into this boy.  He stubbornly refuses to eat much meat, but we'll keep trying.

Asher got two shots today, Hep A and DTaP.  He was such a trooper.  There was a little crying, but after a quick snuggle with mommy he was good to go.  The nurse kept saying how great he was during the whole ordeal - she must get some major screaming fighters!  Poor lady!  ha!

After his appointment he was doing so well we decided to meet up with some friends at the park.  We are having the MOST beautiful weather here this week - yay!

Happy Wednesday all!

so sleepy

I might have dressed Asher just like Drew on Sunday.  It was too cute, I couldn't resist.  :-)

{someone was not interested in having his photo taken...}

When we got home from a super fun morning at church Asher was completely wiped out.  More times than not he sacks out in the car on the way home, but just as often when we get him out of the car seat he pops right up and is ready for round 2 at home.  Not last Sunday - when Drew got him out of the car he just laid down on his shoulder and kept on snoozing.

So sweet!

eighteen months

Asher, you are 18 months old!

How is that possible?

{birth day}

For some reason, this milestone feels more bittersweet than any of the others.  At 18 months I feel like Asher has truly transitioned from baby to toddler.  While I'm amazed at the way he has changed and grown over the past 18 months, I'm also a little sad for his babyhood to leave us behind.

{1 month}

Asher - you are doing so much these days!  You rarely sit still {except to watch your beloved "Monsters, Inc"} and are constantly getting into mischief.  Even when I think things are safe, you figure out a way to get into them.  Just yesterday I walked into the living room and found you sitting on the couch.  How did you get up there?!

{2 month}

You have become a much better eater and try a lot of foods that mommy and daddy are eating.  At the same time you sometimes forget that you like certain foods and will refuse to eat them - that's pretty frustrating for us because it makes it hard to predict what you will eat!

{3 months}

Milk is your #1 favorite.  You will stop playing, quit eating, get into your car seat - anything - for a drink of milk.  Right now you're drinking about 20 oz of milk (4 cups a day) and 24-32 oz of water a day.  It seems like you drink a lot!  You still haven't ever had anything except milk and water to drink - that's working for us and we'll hold out as long as possible!

{4 months}

At 18 months your sleep is wonderful!  We had a rough patch a few months back when you were sick and getting teeth, but now that you're healthy things are great.  Typically you wake up around 7am, have 1 nap for about 2-3 hours at 1pm, then hit the hay at night at 7pm.  Love it!

{5 months}

Just last week you fell head over heels for your blankie.  It's with you for every nap and bedtime and often accompanies us in the car.  We're still able to leave it in the car for now, but I can see that changing soon.  I've tried more times than I can count to get you interested in a lovie, but this is the first interest you've shown.  We'll see if it sticks!

{6 months}

While you talk about "dada" all day long you are definitely a mama's boy right now.  You love to hug and kiss me {I love it too!} and always look to me for comfort when something goes wrong.  My absolute favorite is when I give you a hug and you rest your head on my shoulder and gently pat my back.  melts. my. heart.

{7 months}

Asher, you're still a man of few words.  You dependably say:  "dada," "mama," "cheese," "Ah-er" (Asher), "woof," "moo" - that's about it.  We can tell that you're trying to say more words.  I think we're on the cusp of a vocal renaissance here.  :-)

{8 months}

You know quite a few signs which fills in the gaps nicely.  In fact, you are learning signs really quickly these days.  I only have to show you them once or twice and you will use them reliably!  Asher's favorite signs are: milk, more, all done, dog, boy, bird, please, thank you, water.  Learning more every day!

{9 months}

Dogs are your favorite animal!  Every time we see one you immediately start saying "woof - woof" at it.  I think it's a good sign of social development that you try to speak in the language the dog will find most comfortable.  You're a very thoughtful boy.

{10 months}

We go this Wednesday to see the pediatrician and get all of your current measurements {update with the details then!}.  As far as I can tell, you're a smallish guy.  You wear size 12 months for the most part, with some size 18 month shirts thrown in.  You're wearing a size 4 diaper during the day and size 5 at night.  Shoes are a size 5, but wide - you have adorably fat baby feet.

{11 months}

While you are typically good-natured, we've seen some toddler tantrums coming through.  When you don't get your way {right away!} you can throw a doozy of a fit.  Mommy and Daddy don't put up with much of that and you calm down fairly quickly.  I've seen your sad face more in the past few weeks than in all your other months combined.  When Mommy says you can't do/have something it's the biggest tragedy in the world - sometimes I just have to laugh at your dramatic side!

{12 months}

At 18 months, you have become very independent!  You love to feed yourself and want to walk off on your own constantly.  Whenever we go out in public I have to stay on my toes because you love to run off in any direction!  We might have to get a harness for you soon - sorry, buddy, but you are way too precious to lose.  :-)

{13 months}

Speaking of walking off, you were a bit of a late walker - just truly got confident in the past few weeks - but now nothing can stop you.  You walk and run everywhere!  Last week you learned how to stand up on your own.  I already miss the days when you would reach for my hands to help you.

{14 months}

Asher, you love to play with your friends.  We try to meet up with other kids at least once a week and you are starting to interact with them more and more.  Today we celebrated your 18 month birthday with your best friend, Olivia!

{15 months}

You have 8 teeth with more on the way.  I can see at least 3 white bits poking through.  Your back molars are in which helps you eat more and more delicious foods.  Last week you put down 3 chicken nuggets at Chick-Fil-A and ate most of my french toast over the weekend.  Way to go!

{16 months}

We've been praying with you before bed since you were born and just recently you started saying 'amen' {ah-en} at the end.  Love this!!

{17 months}

Best we can tell you are ALL BOY.  You love to smash things together and are happiest when you can makes lots of noise.  Daddy and you wrestle all the time - I just try to stay out of the way.  ha!  You love to go for walks in the wagon, play at the park, and splash in the pool.

{18 months}

Asher Thomas, these 18 months with you have been the best that Daddy and I have ever had!  While you can be a bundle of challenges we can't imagine our lives without you.  You are so loved little guy - we can't wait to see what the next months and years brings to our family.

genius! {and a plea}

My sister is brilliant {and a sharp dresser}.  Did you know?

When I posted the other day about how much Asher loves to Swiffer the floor she asked if I made it shorter for him.  Um, NO!  But I totally should have!  The Swiffer breaks down into 4 pieces {to fit in the box it came in} so all I had to do was take the middle 2 pieces out.

Voila!  Toddler sized Swiffer!

Asher is very grateful and sweeping more than ever.

You're the best, Aunt Erin!  :-)

We're really looking forward to the weekend around here.  Is it just me or has this week felt really long?  Asher and I can't wait to have a few days to play with Daddy!  Drew and I try to come up with fun stuff to do with A, but it's been SO hot here that it's hard to go outside.  Our indoor ideas seem really limited, so I need to ask...

What do you do with your toddlers on the weekend??

Have a wonderful Friday everyone!

Edit:

I've heard from a few people that they've had trouble leaving comments recently.  Apparently Blogger is having issues - again!  One thing that has helped some people is if they uncheck the "stay signed in" box when logging on.  Give it a try and see if that helps!

all boy

If it makes noise Asher is interested.

Basting brushes aren't quite as impressive as wooden spoons, but that's what he's here to figure out.  Love my boy!

the kind of problem you want to have

If I let him work for free its child slavery...

but if I pay him then we need to fill out a second tax return.  What to do...

Asher has discovered the joy that comes with dry dusting a floor and he won't stop.  Even now he's playing with toys, but won't go more than two feet from the Swiffer mop.

They're new BFFs.

He is such a hard worker.  Love it!

Asher got here, there, and everywhere.

He even tried to Swiffer the carpet.  It wasn't easy, but he would NOT be deterred.  Watch how focused he is - so much like his Daddy when working!  My favorite part is that he insisted on pushing it from the very end of the handle {just like mommy does, I guess}

Thanks for your help buddy!

vote for this cute mug!

Asher is in a cute kid contest!

{a little corny, I know, but we're trying to win a free photo shoot with a fantastic local photographer}

We need your votes, please!!

All you have to do are 3 easy steps...

1) "Like" Andrea Gayle Photography and Design in Facebook

2) Then click on the photo album "2011 Cutest Kid Contest"

3) Click "like" on Asher's photo {he's the second photo, same one as above}

That's it!

The photo with the most "likes" wins!  An important note - you have to "like" the photography business for your vote to count.

Thanks everyone - wish us luck!!  :-)

take note

Guess I had a pack of Post-It notes in the end table drawer.

I thought the living room was toddler-proofed enough that I could leave for a minute.  Asher clearly took my confidence as a personal challenge.

how mommy runs errands

Asher and I had to run some errands yesterday.  Mainly, we had to pick up some shoes from the cobbler.  You read that right.  Drew needed to have some new heels put on his work shoes, so we decided to give our local cobbler a try.  It was SO much cheaper than buying new shoes and they look amazing!

The cobbler {sure, I could call it a shoe repair shop, but cobbler is so much more fun! ha!} is about a mile from our house so we wanted to walk, but it's been ridiculously hot here.  The temp dropped to 87 yesterday afternoon, so Ash jumped in the stroller and off we went.

While I was strapping him in I couldn't help but notice just how BIG he looks in it now.  His feet almost reach the foot rest - when did that happen??

Wow.

By the time we got within a block of the cobbler the sweat was starting to pour and we needed a little refreshment.  Miracle of all miracles we walked right past an adorable frozen custard shop.  Yay!  Asher and I usually go for frozen yogurt, but decided to treat ourselves with a little custard today.

YUM.

Asher was definitely a fan {even though this looks like a grimace, he was signing "more" the whole time}

Little man got pretty thirsty and, of course, I forgot his water cup this trip, so we had to improvise.  Fortunately I always have a bottle of water in the stroller cup holder.  I put a regular straw in it and Asher got a drink.

He loved the novelty of drinking from the big bottle with a red straw.

I wanted to take some photos at the cobbler's shop - it was seriously like stepping back in time - but I had to take Asher out of the stroller to get inside and running free was a little dangerous.  I needed all my wits and both hands to ensure our survival.  Maybe next time.  :-)

I'm heading north to help my sister move this weekend.  The boys will be staying home and having fun here without me.  Hopefully there will be some good stories to share on Monday.  Have a great weekend, everyone!
